Susie Atkinson at Christie's

September 2019

A couple of months ago we were invited by Christie's auction house to curate their Interiors Sale on September 11. Knowing that the items we would be dealing with would no doubt be wonderful artefacts, as well as the talented interior designers who have participated before us - our answer was of course: yes! The task was simple, but would mean a lot of work and creative brainstorming. We were to choose lots from the sale, put them into a scheme and photograph them at a location of our choice. These images would then be used in the sales catalogue. After that we were to design a room at Christie's for visitors to see the pieces during the viewing, days before the sale.

The first step was to pick our favourite lots in the sale - by no means an easy feat. However, we knew straight away that we wanted to use the pair of French patinated-bronze armchairs and a pair of paintings by Nicolette Meeres, and started to put the schemes together.

Once the items had been selected it was time to find a location for the photo-shoot. After a lot of research we settled for a beautiful old Georgian townhouse in the middle of Shoreditch. On the day of the shoot it was very much all-hands-on-deck and the whole team was dedicated to making sure things ran smoothly. Furniture, peacocks and A LOT of plants were rushed up and down the narrow stairs, and after what felt like a full day of exercise, we were delighted to see the results printed in the catalogue a week later. Before we knew it, it was time to install the space in Christie's King Street galleries. With a lot of help from the wonderful Christie's staff, we managed to set it all up in time for the preview later that evening.

It was such a great experience and task - one that suited us down to the ground. As most of you know; we love sourcing and working with beautiful antiques. Not only is it sustainable, it also adds a sense of history and warmth to a room. It was such an honour to be asked to co-curate the sale and we were delighted with the results. Thank you Christie's, and thank you to everyone who came to see the exhibition last week.
